Lactodensimeter
Lactodensimeter for measuring milk density: a quick intake check for watered-down or skimmed milk.
Key Features
- Function: Measures milk density
Details
What it is
A lactodensimeter is a device for measuring milk density. It helps you check the quality and authenticity of the milk you receive from farmers before you pour it into the vat with the rest.
How to read the result
For cow's milk, normal density is about 1.030, usually from 1.028 to 1.032 at 15.5 °C.
- Added water lowers density, so a reading clearly below 1.028 is a sign of watered-down milk.
- Removing cream raises density, so a high reading may point to skimmed milk.
What to keep in mind
The reading depends on the milk temperature. When the milk isn't at the reference temperature, the result is corrected, so you'll also need a digital thermometer. Density alone doesn't confirm composition. Since water lowers it and skimming raises it, milk that has had both can give a normal reading, and fat needs a separate analysis. Other milk intake equipment, such as the antibiotic test, is in dairy equipment.
