Questions about scales, labels and packaging in supermarkets

For departments where products are weighed and labeled before they go to the till.

How does a label-printing scale connect to the till?

DIGI scales connect to a computer or the till via Ethernet or RS-232, from which they receive the product list (PLU) and prices. The label barcode is usually EAN-13 with a prefix from 20 to 29, so the scale and the till software must use the same format.

What goes on the label the scale prints?

DIGI scales print the product name, weight, price per kg, total and barcode, and depending on the model also the production and expiry dates.

Does a supermarket scale need to be verified by the Metrology authority?

Yes, if you use it to sell by weight. According to the General Directorate of Metrology and Law no. 126/2020 “On metrology”, the scale is verified before first use and periodically after that.

Which labels are best for meat and chilled products?

Top thermal labels have a protective top coating; they keep the print longer and resist rubbing better than eco labels, so they suit meat, fish and packs that get wet. We also have labels in thermal material for refrigerated use; when you ask for a quote, tell us at what temperature the product is stored.

What are cheese and fruit in trays wrapped with?

Stretch film, on a manual or semi-automatic wrapping machine. On most manual wrappers, the film is pulled over the tray, cut with a hot wire and sealed underneath on a hot plate; this machine doesn't create a vacuum.

What vacuum bags do you have for meat and cheese counters?

PA/PE vacuum bags in 70 or 80 microns, in the sizes you need; the thicker bag resists bones and sharp edges better. For dairy and cured meats we also have shrink bags in five sizes, from 25 × 30 to 45 × 60 cm.
